The dash flashed a couple of weird unrelated messages, so I figured it was some sort of glitch with the electric PS. Sure enough I restarted after a short wait and everything was normal. The most common cause of transmission problems is the easiest to fix: check the fluid level in the transmission and restore it to the proper levels. Very often, this will solve the problem.
